Prepare for an electrifying night of genre-defying music when McCarter Theatre presents Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott) on Thursday, February 13, at 7:30 PM. A visionary in modern jazz, Adjuah is a two-time Edison Award winner, six-time Grammy nominee, and recipient of the Doris Duke Artist Award.
Born into one of New Orleans’ most storied jazz families, Chief Adjuah is the grandson of legendary Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. and the nephew of jazz innovator and legendary saxophonist, NEA Jazz Master Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. His lineage and deep musical roots have shaped his evolution as an artist and innovator.
Renowned as a trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and sonic architect, Adjuah has revolutionized contemporary jazz with his pioneering Stretch Music style—a boundary-breaking fusion of jazz, hip-hop, African rhythms, and electronic elements. His innovations extend beyond performance: he designed the Adjuah Trumpet, Sirenette, and Chief Adjuah’s Bow, and founded the Stretch Music App and Recording Company.
Hailed as a musical visionary, Adjuah has drawn comparisons to Miles Davis, and his music transcends genres. Over the years, he has collaborated with a wide range of influential artists, including Prince, Thom Yorke, McCoy Tyner, Marcus Miller, Eddie Palmieri, and Mos Def.
A must-see for fans of Vijay Iyer, Roy Hargrove, Marquis Hill, and Makaya McCraven.
This engagement of Chief Adjuah is made possible in part through the Jazz Touring Network program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
