Code of Conduct
McCarter creates a welcoming space for all communities that gather here. We invite everyone to join us in fostering a community of respect, kindness, and inclusion.
We commit to a culture of true hospitality, and will strive to anticipate and meet the needs of all our guests with a generous and friendly spirit, so that all who walk through our doors know that they belong here. Mutual respect and trust are foundational to a healthy community. McCarter Theatre Center stands firmly against racism, hatred, bigotry, and discrimination of any kind.
We require all guests, students, artists, and staff to conform to the following code of conduct:
Be respectful of the venue property.
Be courteous of everyone. We will not tolerate intentionally unruly or disruptive behavior prior to, during, or after performances.
Turn off cell phones or set them to silent mode and refrain from text messaging and using cell phones as a light source during an event (except when using accessibility technology).
Unless expressly invited in our curtain speech, taking photographs and using recording devices is never permitted at any performance.
Do not occupy a seat or remain in an area for which you do not possess a valid ticket. Everyone must be able to provide their ticket upon request by a Front-of-House staff member.
Avoid blocking the aisles and the view of other guests within the theater.
Never stand on the theater seats (children included).
Abstain from using offensive language or obscene gestures, fighting, throwing objects, and engaging in other behavior detrimental to the safety and enjoyment of everyone. McCarter reserves the right to refuse admission or eject any person whose conduct is deemed by management to be disorderly or who fails to comply with McCarter personnel and posted signs.
McCarter serves a variety of snacks and drinks, including wine and beer. Concessions may typically be brought into the theatre. No outside food or drinks are permitted. Please don’t eat or drink noisily during the show. Drink alcoholic beverages responsibly.
Use the designated external smoking areas including the use of e-cigarettes and vaping.
Please do not interfere with the event, the artists, or the staff in any way during and after a performance.
Your attendance at the theatre serves as permission to appear in photographs or video taken in public areas of the theatre.
We encourage everyone to report inappropriate or offensive behavior to an usher, House Manager, or McCarter management.
